What is creative fatigue in advertising?
Creative fatigue is when an ad loses performance because its audience has seen it too often. Here are the signals to watch, how Meta's Ads Manager flags it, a worked SAR example, and how to fix it.
Creative fatigue is the drop in an ad's performance that happens when the same audience has seen the same creative too many times. Click-through rate falls, frequency climbs and cost per result rises, even though targeting and budget have not changed. The usual fix is a genuinely new concept, not a small tweak to the old one.
How do you spot creative fatigue?
Compare the ad with its own early weeks and with your past ads.
| Signal | What fatigue looks like |
|---|---|
| Frequency | Rising week over week |
| Click-through rate | Falling from its early level |
| Cost per result | Rising against past performance |
| Comments and reactions | Fewer, or more negative |
Meta flags this in Ads Manager. Its creative fatigue help page says you will see "Creative limited" when cost per result is more than ads you ran in the past but less than twice as much, and "Creative fatigue" when it is twice as much or more. Meta counts recent exposures of the image or video across other campaigns from your Page too.
Creative fatigue example
An illustrative Saudi ad set runs one video for four weeks:
| Week | Frequency | CTR | Cost per purchase |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1.6 | 1.4% | SAR 45 |
| 2 | 2.5 | 1.1% | SAR 58 |
| 3 | 3.4 | 0.9% | SAR 74 |
| 4 | 4.2 | 0.7% | SAR 95 |
By week 4 the cost per purchase is more than double its week 1 level. If your past ads also ran near SAR 45, that is the point at which Meta's rule shows "Creative fatigue."
How to fix creative fatigue
- Launch new concepts: a different hook, format or angle, not a new color.
- Run several creatives at once so no single ad carries the audience.
- Widen the audience if it is small, which lowers frequency.
- Plan the replacement while the current winner is still working.

Frequently asked questions
What causes creative fatigue?
Repetition. When the same people see an ad many times, it stops catching their attention, and those still interested have usually acted already. Small audiences, high budgets and long-running single creatives make it happen faster. Retargeting audiences fatigue especially quickly because they are small and see your ads often.
How often should I refresh ad creative?
Refresh when the signals appear, not on a fixed calendar. Watch frequency, click-through rate and cost per result against each ad's own early weeks. Larger audiences and smaller budgets let a creative run longer. Keep new concepts ready so you can swap them in as soon as a winner starts to slip.
Is creative fatigue the same as ad fatigue?
They are often used interchangeably. Creative fatigue points to the ad itself wearing out, so a new creative fixes it. Ad fatigue is sometimes used more broadly, including an audience that has seen too much from your brand overall. In that case new creative helps less than reaching new people or lowering frequency.
