What is ad frequency in advertising?
Ad frequency is how many times, on average, each person saw your ad. Here is the formula, how Meta counts it, a worked example that shows why averages mislead, and when frequency signals creative fatigue.
Ad frequency is the average number of times each person, or account, saw your ad during a set period. It equals impressions divided by reach. A frequency of 3 means the average person reached saw the ad three times, although some saw it once and others many more times. It is the main early warning for creative fatigue.
How do you calculate ad frequency?
| Metric | Formula |
|---|---|
| Frequency | Impressions ÷ reach |
| Reach | Impressions ÷ frequency |
| Impressions | Reach × frequency |
Always state the period. Frequency over a week and over a whole campaign are different numbers, because reach does not add up day by day.
On Meta, reach and frequency count Accounts Center accounts rather than people. Meta's January 2023 terminology update made that change and said its calculation methodology was not changing. As Jon Loomer summarizes, frequency is now "the average number of times each Accounts Center account saw your ad."
Ad frequency example
An illustrative UK campaign delivers 600,000 impressions to 150,000 people at a £8 CPM, so it costs £4,800 and the frequency is 4.0. That average hides the spread: 100,000 people saw the ad once and 50,000 saw it ten times each. The heavy group is where fatigue starts.
When does ad frequency matter?
- Awareness: a single exposure is easy to miss, so very low frequency can leave you with reach that few people remember.
- Performance: rising frequency with falling CTR and rising cost per result points to creative fatigue.
- Small audiences: retargeting lists hit high frequency quickly, even on small budgets.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good ad frequency?
There is no universal number. The right frequency depends on your objective, audience size, creative and time period. Awareness campaigns usually aim for repeated exposure, while conversion campaigns watch for the point where more frequency stops paying. Track CTR and cost per result as frequency rises and act when they turn.
What is the difference between reach and frequency?
Reach counts how many unique people or accounts saw your ad at least once. Frequency is how many times, on average, each of them saw it. Together they make up impressions: reach multiplied by frequency. A campaign can grow impressions by reaching new people or by showing the ad more often to the same people.
Why does my frequency differ between reports?
Usually because the period differs. Reach is unique within a time range, so frequency for a full month is not the average of daily frequencies. Breakdowns, attribution settings and how each platform counts people or accounts also change it. Compare frequency only across reports that use the same date range and level.
