What is multi-touch attribution? MTA explained
Multi-touch attribution shares the credit for a conversion across several of the touchpoints that came before it. Here is what MTA means, how the weights work, a worked SAR example, where it stands in Google's tools and what it cannot measure.
Multi-touch attribution (MTA) shares the credit for a conversion across several of the ads, emails and visits that came before it, instead of giving all of it to one touch. Linear, time decay, position-based, data-driven and custom models are all multi-touch. The aim is to value channels that start and nurture demand, not only the one that closes it.
How do you calculate multi-touch attribution?
Each touch on the path gets a weight, the weights add up to 100%, and each touch's credit is the conversion value multiplied by its weight. The model decides the weights:
| Model | Weights |
|---|---|
| Linear | Equal for every touch |
| Time decay | Rising toward the conversion |
| Position-based | 40% first, 40% last, 20% shared in the middle |
| Data-driven | Learned from converting and non-converting paths |
| Custom | Set by you, per touchpoint or stage |
Multi-touch attribution example
An illustrative SAR 2,000 order in Saudi Arabia follows five touches. Credit in SAR, with middle touches rounded:
| Touch | Linear | Position-based |
|---|---|---|
| TikTok ad (first) | 400 | 800 |
| Snapchat ad | 400 | 133 |
| Non-brand search ad | 400 | 133 |
| 400 | 133 | |
| Brand search ad (last) | 400 | 800 |
Under last click, brand search would take all SAR 2,000 and both social channels would show no sales at all.
Where does multi-touch attribution stand in Google's tools?
Google has removed its rule-based multi-touch models. In an April 2023 announcement, it said first click, linear, time decay and position-based models would leave Google Ads and GA4, and switched remaining conversion actions to data-driven from September 2023. GA4 now offers data-driven and last click models only, so data-driven is Google's remaining multi-touch option.
What are the limits of multi-touch attribution?
MTA only credits touches it can see. Ad views on social platforms, cross-device journeys, declined cookies and offline sales through WhatsApp, phone or stores often go missing. It also measures correlation, not cause: a touch on the path may not have changed the outcome. Check MTA against incrementality tests and marketing mix modeling.
How Grower helps
Grower's attribution engine de-duplicates conversions from every channel and app into one unified conversion count, then credits each touchpoint with the model you pick, including linear, time decay, position-based (40/20/40) and custom weights per touchpoint.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between multi-touch and single-touch attribution?
Single-touch models give 100% of the credit to one touchpoint: the first under first click, the last under last click. Multi-touch models split the credit across several touches. Single-touch is simpler and more stable but blind to the rest of the journey, while multi-touch shows how channels work together but depends on tracking every touch.
Which multi-touch model should I use?
Match it to your sales cycle. Position-based suits journeys where discovery and closing both matter, such as ecommerce with paid social prospecting. Time decay suits short, promotion-driven cycles. B2B teams with long cycles often use custom weights that credit the first touch, demo request and opportunity stages. Data-driven works when you have enough conversions for the algorithm.
Does Google Analytics 4 support multi-touch attribution?
Partly. GA4's data-driven model distributes credit across the channels on a path, so it is multi-touch, but you cannot choose linear, time decay or position-based rules, which Google removed in 2023. GA4 also excludes direct visits from credit unless the whole path is direct. For rule-based multi-touch views you need a tool outside GA4.
