Definition Conversion rate is the percentage of visitors, clicks or ad interactions that complete a desired action, such as a purchase, sign-up or lead form. Conversion rate = conversions ÷ visitors (or clicks) × 100

Conversion rate is the percentage of visitors, clicks or ad interactions that go on to complete the action you want, such as a purchase, sign-up, lead form or app install. Divide conversions by the number of visitors or clicks and multiply by 100. It shows how well your landing page, offer and checkout turn interest into results.

How do you calculate conversion rate?

ContextFormula
Website ordersOrders ÷ sessions × 100
Ad platformConversions ÷ ad interactions × 100
Lead generation pageLeads ÷ landing page visitors × 100

Google Ads defines its conversion rate as "the average number of conversions per ad interaction, shown as a percentage", so 50 conversions from 1,000 interactions is 5%. Its help page notes the rate can go over 100% when more than one conversion is counted per interaction. GA4 instead reports a session key event rate: sessions with a key event divided by all sessions.

Conversion rate example

An illustrative month for a UAE electronics store:

  • Sessions: 80,000. Orders: 1,600. Conversion rate: 1,600 ÷ 80,000 = 2%.
  • Average order value: AED 450, so revenue is AED 720,000.
  • Raising the conversion rate to 2.5% with the same traffic adds 400 orders and AED 180,000 of revenue, with no extra ad spend.

What is a good conversion rate?

It depends on the action, channel, price and industry. For search ads, WordStream's 2026 Google Ads benchmarks put the median at 8.18% of ad clicks across 13,474 US campaigns from April 2025 to March 2026. A store-wide purchase rate measures something different, so benchmark against your own funnel by channel and device.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Google Ads and GA4 show different conversion rates?

They divide different things. Google Ads divides conversions by ad interactions and can count more than one conversion per interaction. GA4 divides sessions or users with a key event by all sessions or users, across all traffic. They also attribute and date conversions differently, so treat each rate as useful inside its own tool rather than expecting a match.

How do you improve conversion rate?

Start where visitors drop off. Make the landing page match the ad's promise, speed up mobile load times, show prices, delivery times and returns clearly, cut form fields and checkout steps, and offer the payment methods your buyers expect, such as cash on delivery or buy now pay later in the Gulf. Test one change at a time.

Can a conversion rate be too high?

A suspiciously high rate usually points to a tracking problem, such as a conversion firing on page load, duplicate tags or counting every conversion per click. It can also mean targeting is so narrow it only reaches people who would have bought anyway. Check tags against your order system, then test whether more reach adds sales.
